Soak up the views at this sea-themed waterfront hotel in Colonia Sant Jordi, near some of Mallorca's best beaches

Once a sleepy fishing village, now a place for visitors to relax by the sea, Colònia de Sant Jordi is a low-key, family-friendly resort town in southern Mallorca. Many come here for its proximity to the island’s best beaches, like Es Trenc and Es Carbo, known for their sugary white sands and turquoise sea. And with Palma Airport just 45 minutes away, this is an easy place for a beach getaway with everything nearby.

Right on the waterfront in the centre of town, overlooking boats and the gentle comings and goings of the promenade, Hotel Honucai fits neatly into the town's laidback rhythm. The name Honucai comes from the Hawaiian word for sea turtle, and subtle nods to the ocean are peppered throughout the hotel - blue colour schemes in the rooms, fish wall murals in the restaurant, shade sails on the roof. Glistening views of the town harbour take centre stage, best seen from the buzzy rooftop terrace, where the swimming pool melts into a brilliant blue horizon. Below, the 78 rooms are all soft neutrals and feature walls, and many have sea-view terraces. Days are filled with beach-hopping and boat trips - visit Cabrera island or head out on a sunset cruise. Then spend evenings feasting on Mediterranean fare at Salicornia restaurant, which showcases seasonal ingredients from the island and the sea. Great views, beach vibes, and a fabulous location: just what you need to ease into sweet island life.

Highs

    • Prime seafront location with beaches, cafés and restaurants all within walking distance
    • Some of Mallorca’s best beaches, like famous Es Trenc, are nearby, while Palma Airport is an easy 45-minute drive away
    • The rooftop terrace steals the show, with a bar, pool and wide sea views - perfect for sundowners
    • Bright, well-designed rooms, which are very good value in spring and autumn months; we think sea-view options would be worth the upgrade

Lows

    • No car park; street parking only - which might be a problem in high season
    • The pool is more for dipping than swimming, and we've heard there are limited loungers on the rooftop
    • Some rooms face the street, so you don’t get those lovely sea views - check when booking

Best time to go

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal: warm sea temperatures, fewer crowds and a lovely, languid pace in town. Room rates are also much better value in these shoulder months. July and August bring hotter weather and higher prices, though the area never feels wildly busy. The hotel closes in winter, from November to early March.

Our top tips

If you're around on a weekend evening (Fri & Sat) in summer, head up to The Top for a street food feast, when tapas-style dishes and cocktails are served beneath the funky metallic palm leaves.

Rooms

The rooms all share a calm, contemporary look, with feature walls, cushions and lighting bringing unique character and colour to each. We hear the beds are particularly comfortable. Higher-floor rooms are quieter and have better views.

Standard Rooms are the most affordable option and are best suited to shorter stays - some face inland or the street and might feel a little compact. Superior Rooms offer a bit more breathing space and are a noticeable step-up in comfort. Many have balconies and sea views, and a few also have private plunge pools, making them a good middle-ground choice if you want more light without paying top rates. Suites have separate living rooms and overlook the harbour and promenade, with balconies for your morning coffee or late-afternoon drink.

There are a handful of triple and quadruple rooms too, which would work well for families. But this is a fairly grown-up-style hotel, so we’d say these are aimed more at those travelling with older kids.

Features include:

Eating

Meals at Hotel Honucai are served in the ground-floor Salicornia restaurant, overlooking the harbour. It’s a bright, contemporary space with a fun beach theme: coral in display cabinets, an under-the-sea scene painted on one wall, porthole windows peeping through to the kitchen. At the other end of the restaurant, large windows frame the sea. It feels relaxed rather than formal, with a gently buzzy atmosphere in the evenings as guests and locals drift in from the promenade.

Breakfast is a buffet spread of fruit, pastries, eggs cooked to order and local touches like Mallorcan cheeses and cured meats. You can eat inside or out on the terrace, watching fishing boats come and go — an easy, unhurried start to the day. Dinner focuses on Mediterranean cooking with a strong seafood bias. Expect grilled local fish, lobster, and seafood rice dishes, and well-executed classics such as slow-cooked lamb or beef cheek.

That said, Colònia de Sant Jordi has plenty of good restaurants within a short walk, so many guests choose to mix hotel dining with meals out. The real evening draw at Honucai is the rooftop bar, where cocktails are served alongside sea views at sunset - a popular spot for a pre-dinner drink before heading into town.

  • Hit the beach! The town beach is right outside, or you can walk a little further to Es Dolc (10-15 minutes), which is quieter and has safe swimming, or onwards still to secluded and unspoilt Es Carbo. The famous white sands of Es Trenc aren’t far away either - a 10-minute drive north
  • Head out on a boat trip from the harbour - sunset cruises, sailing trips and excursions to the nearby island of Cabrera or the natural marine reserve near Es Trenc are all on offer, with plenty of snorkel stops along the way. You can charter boats from here, too
