This charming hotel occupies a 19th-century building in Bohinjska Bistrica, near Lake Bohinj and the soaring Julian Alps – and makes a stylish base for lovers of the great outdoors. Austro-Hungarian nobility stayed here in 1906 for the official opening of the Bohinj Tunnel (part of the Vienna-Trieste railway). Over a century later, the hotel was renovated to a high standard: the original facade has been retained, while a chic new wood-and-glass conservatory at the back houses the restaurant, which serves exquisite gourmet fare. Wooden stairs lead up to 18 light-filled rooms, with the stairwell displaying black-and-white photos of the region's mountains, lakes and waterfalls – the landscape you're here to see. The rear garden has a small biodynamic swimming pool and sunbeds, plus a fire pit for summer months, and is backed by a row of 120-year-old chestnut trees lining the River Belca.
With such stunning unspoilt nature on your doorstep, a myriad of excellent adventure sports are as well – from hiking, climbing, kayaking, SUP and paragliding, to snowsports in the winter months. You can expect blissful peace and quiet when you return to the hotel – no noisy kids as it's adults-only (16+). The Zlata Vila Wellness and Spa has a hot tub and Finnish sauna, and a relaxation area. They suggest doing a digital detox while you're here – sleep soundly and feel utterly replenished.

Our top tips
We absolutely adored cycling along the bike path from Bohinjska Bistrica to Lake Bohinj (6km). The route passes through flat meadows, woodland and several sleepy villages with centuries-old churches, steep-pitched rooftops and traditional wooden hayracks – a secret little world rimmed by the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps rising into an azure sky. Near the lake, in Stara Fužina, you can check out the Triglav National Park visitor's centre.

Rooms
There are 18 rooms of varying size and configuration, and they come in five categories. All rooms combine existing 19th-century details with new wooden floors, comfy super-kingsize beds, and contemporary furnishings in wood, leather and velvet. Stone-tiled bathrooms have underfloor heating, walk-in rain showers and Argentum toiletries. In the interest of digital detox, there is no TV or telephone, and no minibar either.
The most affordable rooms are the Town Classics and the River Melodies, several of which have gorgeous cushioned window seats looking down to the river and the garden. Note, these two categories do not get free access to the spa. We stayed in a cosy Chestnut Embrace room, under the sloping roof, with stunning mountain views and a spacious bathroom. Romantics might choose between the Lover's Balcony (which has a mirrored wall and a marble balcony) and the sumptuous Royal Hug (with a big French-balcony-style window affording views of both the mountains and the river).

Eating
Chef Jože Godec uses local seasonal ingredients to create gourmet delights, blending traditional recipes with contemporary flair. There is no a la carte menu - instead, each day, Godec compiles a three-course degustation lunch and a four-course and six-course dinner. Be prepared to be enchanted. At dinner, we feasted on bean soup with pasta, truffles and sour cream; brown trout with cauliflower and hazelnuts; and lamb rump with potato terrine and charred endive. Each course was paired with a Slovenian wine, from all three wine-growing regions (covering most indigenous varietals) and we rounded off with chocolate and orange mousse.
Next morning, breakfast saw a spread of fresh fruit, local yoghurt and homemade cakes and pastries, plus Eggs Benedict cooked to order. And there's excellent espresso coffee too. As it was winter, we dined in the restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling glazing giving onto the garden. In summer, you can eat on the terrace, in the shade of a row of towering chestnut trees lining the River Belca.
