After centuries of welcoming travellers to the Peak District, The Cavendish Hotel has perfected the art of hospitality. I arrived on a chilly January afternoon, having driven through low-hanging clouds over the Derbyshire Dales, making the warmth of the handsome lobby and fire-lit lounge all the more inviting. The Chatsworth Estate runs right up to the front door; most of the 28 rooms have expansive views of the green fields and sloping hills that surround the stately home (Pride and Prejudice fans will recognise it as Pemberley).
The interiors, designed by Nicola Harding, pay homage to the hotel's storied history. Vintage books, local art and old photos of the Devonshire family adorn the colourful walls, blending heritage with homeliness to create rooms you want to linger in. There are two excellent restaurants to suit any occasion, a garden terrace for lazy summer lunches, and a cosy bar warmed by a fireplace in winter. Whether you're here to hike Stanage Edge, live out your Jane Austen fantasy at Chatsworth, or eat your weight in Bakewell tarts, the location couldn't be better. The Cavendish truly embodies the Peak District, full of charm, character and understated elegance. It felt like my visit was over far too soon... which is always a good sign.
