The Glenburn Penthouse

Kolkata, India Book from Book from £245 per night

Kolkata’s first boutique hotel: this brand-new 9-suite haven has elegant rooms and a rooftop pool overlooking the city’s colonial splendours
Tucked quietly atop a modern office block, The Glenburn Penthouse is Kolkata’s first boutique hotel, yet it exudes an ageless elegance. Close to Maidan Park and the stunning Victoria Memorial palace, the hotel provides wonderful views of the cityscape – particularly spectacular from its sundeck and rooftop infinity pool. The décor is tasteful: antique maps and print collections grace the 9 gorgeous suites; there are vintage carpets in the sitting areas; marble terraces have white wicker chairs and ceiling fans; and the marble bathrooms are utterly pristine. We especially like the drawing room’s handmade ‘Hindoostan’ wallpaper, designed in Paris, depicting scenes of Indian rural life.

Breakfast and afternoon tea are included in the rate; there's also a daily changing menu of Bengali dishes for guests who wish to have lunch or dinner in the hotel. Guides are on-hand for private tours of historic sites, museums, galleries, and textile markets. This is a perfect hideaway if you're eager to explore Kolkata’s vibrant culture and exciting street life – but you'll really appreciate returning to The Glenburn's graceful tranquility.
Covid-19 update: some services and facilities may be changed as a result of Coronavirus measures.

Best time to go

In terms of heat, October through to March are the driest and most comfortable months. April and May can be very hot indeed (and humid), while the monsoon season is from June to September. The hotel is open all year.

Our top tips

Visit Kolkata during Durga Puga in October – in celebration of the Hindu warrior goddess Durga. The city turns into a carnival for 5 days, with parades, light shows, street parties and bejewelled statues on display.

Rooms

The style of The Glenburn's 9 large suites is colonial with a contemporary twist. Four-poster beds have intricately carved wooden headboards and hand-embroidered cotton sheets. There are Victorian chaise longues and Art Deco mirrored desks. The floors are traditional teak, while green-and-white bathroom tiles nod to Pop Art. Ample natural light streams in from large picture windows, which can be shuttered against the midday heat.

The 4 Grand Bengal Suites are the most spacious, with either a direct view of the magnificent Victoria Memorial, or a private terrace and separate living room that can accommodate an extra bed. The 5 Kolkata Suites are slightly smaller, with views across the green expanse of The Maidan, Kolkata’s vast central park. One has a balcony.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Bathrobes
  • Coffee / tea making
  • Hairdryer
  • Minibar/fridge
  • Safe box

Eating

Begin your mornings alfresco: when the weather is fine (and it often is), breakfast is served on the pretty balcony off the sitting room. Rates also include afternoon high tea, a gracious ritual served in the marbled Victoria Tea Terrace overlooking the stunning Victoria Memorial.

Two- or 3-course lunches and dinners are available on request – the menu changes daily, and is an enticing blend of modern British, French classics and Anglo-Indian favourites, with a smattering of Bengali dishes. Meals can be eaten in the elegant Dining Room or on the cool rooftop, with its sweeping views over the city.

If venturing out, nearby Park Street - the most famous road in Kolkata - is a hub of restaurants and bars. Start with a cocktail in the hotel’s Drawing Room before heading out to sample this fabled thoroughfare's dining highlights.
