Chic city style meets palpable history at this charming, renovated guesthouse with pool and sauna, steps from the old square

Dating back to the 13th century and with a population of just 457, the charming bastide town of Monpazier packs a punch. Despite its size, it’s brimming with medieval architecture, artisan boutiques and local crafts, excellent cafés and restaurants, and a Thursday food market. Occupying an historic Maison de Maître behind the central Place des Cornières, you’ll find Le Chevalier Bleu. This perfectly located guesthouse, recently revived with an elegant top-to-toe restoration, is framed by tall cream shutters and cheerful window boxes, stylish modern accents – SMEG mini-fridges, statement bathrooms, a sauna – oak beams, stripped floorboards, and immense original fireplaces. Embrace a slower pace of life as you relax by the outdoor patio pool, the courtyard glowing honey-gold beneath the high sun. In among the graceful grandeur, an Italian architect has layered in a modern sensibility throughout the 14 rooms that beautifully balances the property’s listed status with the verve of a chic city boutique.

Whether visiting as a couple or bringing a little one, there are playgrounds, picnic areas and a pétanque court nearby, as well as a small supermarket and pharmacy. Explore the rolling Périgord countryside, then return to glasses of Champagne in the hotel bar (or claret, with the Bordeaux region a tempting day trip possibility), before exploring Monpazier’s culinary scene. A friendly yet great value Dordogne base.

Highs

    • The location is ideal in the heart of Monpazier. After a morning swim, you can nip to Monpazier’s artisan workshops, or get waylaid by the treasures of the adjacent antiques store
    • A perfect balance of outstanding service amid an intimate and relaxed vibe, especially ideal for couples
    • Enclosed by sun-warmed, sand-coloured walls, the pool is delightful by day or perfect when lit in the evening for aperitifs
    • Very affordable given the location and space on offer

Lows

    • No dinner service and breakfast is on the simpler side, but the welcoming bar offers great snacks and regional wines, and you're within a few minutes’ walk of many restaurants
    • The pool is unheated and closed during the winter months (Oct/Nov-Mar/Apr)
    • No twin beds

Best time to go

Late spring and early autumn are glorious in the Dordogne, with golden light for market strolls and vineyard tours minus the summer throngs. If you arrive in high season, Monpazier hums with festivals, while the long evenings are an al fresco dining delight – and Le Chevalier Bleu’s pool a welcome refuge from the heat.

Our top tips

Hire an e-bike from Monpazier and explore the countryside by bike, or follow walking routes directly from the village. It’s the perfect place to slow down.

Rooms

The 14 rooms are airy and elegantly composed, with sunlight streaming across polished wooden floorboards and supremely comfortable beds. Muted modernist furniture sits easily alongside centuries-old features, from exposed beams to capacious stone fireplaces in the larger rooms. The contemporary ensuite bathrooms are stylish and sleek, with marble finishes and generous rain showers. Thoughtful extras include SMEG mini-fridges stocked with chilled wine and water, plus coffee machines for relaxed mornings.

Three categories are available. The majority take the form of Chic doubles (up to 22m²) and Comfy apartments (30-40m²), the latter with handy kitchenettes consisting of a sink, microwave, 2-ring stove top, kettle, and basic crockery. Two offer direct access to the pool, while the rest enjoy access to a communal terrace on the first floor. Some rooms (2 Chic and 2 Comfy) share the same landing but have their own entrances, so book these together if you're bringing along teens who prefer their own space.

The second-floor Spacy suite (60m²) is the obvious choice for couples looking for more room or small families, adding a living area and separate bedroom. The calming, minimal design of the hotel continues through these rooms, and windows look out onto lovely pool and village views. All apartments have kingsize beds (there are queens in the Chic rooms to maximise space), and it’s possible to have extra beds in the Comfy and Spacy categories.

Be prepared for some quirks – the building is listed, so the architect had to be creative. In some rooms, the shower opens up directly into the main room, while some sinks, designed as an homage to the building's history, won't supply the space necessary for the typical toiletries of the modern era.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Central heating
  • Coffee / tea making
  • Hairdryer
  • Minibar
  • Pool towels
  • Satellite TV
  • Toiletries
  • WiFi

Eating

The hotel’s Bar du Jour Le Bleu serves a simple and delicious French buffet breakfast: buttery croissants, fresh fruit, muesli, locally baked bread with artisanal jams, cereals and yoghurts. You can also squeeze fresh orange juice or boil an egg to your own satisfaction, and expect excellent coffee.

Throughout the day and evening, light bites – think well-laden cheese and charcuterie boards, soup du jour, or quiche – are available at the snack bar as well as chilled Champagne or homemade iced tea to refresh yourself in the poolside heat.

At dinnertime, there's plenty on offer in Monpazier itself and a little further afield. Stay local and pop over for a beer at Biere de la Bastide, an artisan, Brit-owned brewery with a full hot and cold menu, or grab a pizza at Chez Minou. For a more fine-dining experience, try Restaurant Eléonore, located within Château Hôtel Edward 1er (open Apr-Dec). Note that in winter, options can be a bit more limited.

Come lilac dusk, head to the gold-edged hotel bar and enjoy well-chosen regional beverages including Champagne and Bordeaux.
