A laid-back, eco-conscious retreat with 8 sea-view rooms, set on the beach beside Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Hidden away beneath towering palm trees just south of Tulum beach, Olas Tulum grabs a picture-perfect slice of one of Mexico's finest stretches of sand. Genuine service and authenticity are top priorities, and their eco-philosophy is sincere: power is solar, water is rain-collected and the only air-con is the Caribbean breeze. The spacious grounds conceal 8 stylish and airy rooms, set in 2 whitewashed villas, with cool, uncluttered interiors; some have kitchenettes, and all have ocean views out through the palms. Thatched shelters and loungers just metres from the waves ensure the vibe here is about sea, sunshine and slowing down.

Fresh breakfasts are served at one huge table using produce from local farms and there are hip restaurants and bars just a beach stroll away. Spirited owner, Jimmy, is the life and soul of the place, and he and his affable team will happily arrange dinner reservations and boat tours through the stunning Sian Ka'an Reserve or point you in the direction of little-known cenotes for an unforgettable subterranean dip. The town's flashy hotel district and beach clubs may lie beyond the gates, but the vibe at Olas is barefoot and easy, reminiscent of the boho Tulum of old. No fancy facilities, just a chic space for couples to kick back in, with wilderness and spectacular ruins right on your doorstep.

Highs

  • We loved the stunning beachside setting, with full or at least partial ocean views from all the suites
  • A friendly and welcoming vibe, with no kids under 6; staff know when guests want to chat... and when they want to just chill
  • Olas Tulum has won global recognition for its environmental design and sustainability
  • The yoga deck is available with mats and blocks for guests to use anytime, and massage sessions can be booked at any time
  • Boogie-boards are available to borrow; and bikes are available to rent for exploring the area

Lows

  • There's no dinner service, but there are restaurants nearby
  • No pool, though the ocean is just a few steps away
  • A fairly strict payment policy, and the 50% balance can only be paid in cash at the time of stay
  • No air-con though with overhead fans and ocean breezes this isn't an issue
  • The boutiques, bars and eateries in the nearby 'hotel zone' are trendy and expensive; evidence that Tulum has lost some of its bohemian charm in recent years, but Olas still has it in spades

Best time to go

November to April are the best months – the weather is usually sunny, warm and dry. June to October is the low season, when conditions can be wet and very hot, with a chance of hurricanes. Olas Tulum is closed for the month of September.

Our top tips

For a magical experience, get up early and head straight to the cenote at Ek Balam ruins - if you're lucky, you'll get this gorgeous green pool all to yourself. Leaving Olas around 8am (by taxi or private transfer) should get you there by 10am, before the tour groups arrive late morning.

Rooms

The Oceanfront Master Suite is the star of the show, with a spacious split-level living room, a pair of kingsize 4-posters and a huge terrace just yards from the sea. It features a large separate kitchen and a bathroom with double sinks and walk-in shower.

The Oceanfront Suite has a kingsize bed draped in Mexican fabrics and faces a curve of ocean-view windows. There's a kitchenette for preparing simple meals but no private outside space. The smaller Oceanfront Junior Suite has a queensize Balinese canopy bed and wraparound windows facing the sea.

We stayed on the upper level, in one of the airy Oceanfront Balcony Suites. The sunlight gleamed off the polished concrete walls and floor, and the balcony framed the view of palms and ocean so perfectly. The furniture was reclaimed wood and the kitchenette was small but functional. From our large, comfy canopy bed, we were lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves.

The Ocean View Balcony Suites and the Ocean View Deluxe Balcony Suite sit in a newer villa further back from the beach, though they still have partial sea views. They are more contemporary in style, with kingsize beds and modern Danish furniture. Ocean View Balcony Suites don't have kitchenettes, but the Ocean View Deluxe Balcony Suite has a lovely large kitchen.

Eating

A complimentary breakfast is eaten alfresco with other guests at a communal table under the palms. It's a good opportunity to exchange Tulum tips while enjoying organic French press coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, yogurt, homemade granola and fruit, plus a daily changing dish such as avocado toast, boiled eggs or banana bread.

If you're hanging out here during the day, don't skip lunch. Our mixed ceviche, which featured fish from Hartwood and Campeche prawns, was easily the best of our trip (and we tried a lot). Other treats on the menu include vegan ceviche with coconut & cucumber (Jimmy's favourite), shrimp tacos, tuna sashimi tostada, and beer battered fish with homemade pineapple habanero sauce. All fish is caught locally and served fresh.

If you fancy eating out, stroll along the beach or cycle into the 'hotel zone' on one of the hotel's bikes and you’ll be spoilt for choice – you'll find restaurant recommendations in your room's guest file. Don't miss Hartwood, one of the most talked-about diners in the Caribbean. Further afield, Cetli specialises in regional Oaxacan dishes. We had delicious, authentic Chinese fare at Wang in Tulum Town, and Taqueria La Chiapaneca comes highly recommended.

There’s also a gas barbecue should you fancy shopping for your meal in Tulum’s lively market. Although there's no bar onsite, you're welcome to bring your own drinks. Take them up to the sunset rooftop and soak in the view.
