Chapel 5 Suites

Naxxar, Malta Book from Book from £83 per night

Historic charm combines with modern comforts and a warm welcome at this central Malta B&B
Oh, this is a gorgeous well-kept secret, the joy of yet-to-be-discovered small-town Malta. Chapel 5 is tucked away at the end of a pretty little alley in historic Naxxar, a laid-back, untouristy place in the north of the island. The characterful, rambling townhouse was carefully converted into guest suites in 2013 by friendly, welcoming couple Alex and Malcolm, who have a background in hospitality and aviation. They've since bought the house next door and added more suites.

The main house centres on a double-height dining room with a glass roof, which is where guests eat their breakfast buffet. There’s a small pool in the courtyard and a blue-and-white-tiled rooftop where you can sunbathe, have massages or enjoy early-morning yoga sessions. You get your own key to the house so can come and go as you please, but there's usually someone around to offer advice and recommendations on where to go.

  • Excellent value
  • A quiet location in a locals' town, allowing you to dip in to the touristy parts of the island (you're 15 minutes from beaches and Valletta)
  • A warm welcome and a family feel that give a home-from-home atmosphere
  • Colourful furnishings from all over the world
  • A historic building with lots of character

  • A 3-night minimum stay
  • No bar and be aware this is a B&B rather than a full-service hotel
  • One room is accessed by a spiral staircase; enquire for more information
  • A work in progress, the second house is still evolving

Best time to go

Malta's loveliest months are May-June and September-October. The B&B is closed in late November-late December annually (though open for New Year's Eve), and for 6 weeks in January and February.

Our top tips

Beautiful Gozo is a quick hop away; wander along the cliff tops at Ta’Cenc for amazing sunset views, or take a coastal walk on one of the island’s many winding paths. Head to Xlendi for walks, swimming in the sea and scuba diving in crystal-clear waters.

Room: Superior Suite Emerald

With furnishings from the owners’ international travels, the suites are full of lovely pieces from Indonesia, Dubai and Morocco. High ceilings and large windows allow light to flood in, and walls and floors are made from local sandstone.

Of the Deluxe Suites, the new-build Emerald is our top choice, it's on the rooftop and comes with high-beamed ceilings, a small private terrace at the back, bright walls covered in Veneziano plaster, and a shower bathroom. For a bathtub, go for Yellow or Red, which also has a small balcony. The 50.sq.m Violet Deluxe Suite has a bedroom and sitting room with a double sofabed so is best for families, but is accessed via a wrought-iron spiral staircase, so pack lightly!

Since our visit, a collection of individually themed Superior Suites have been added next door to the main house. We're yet to personally view them, but they offer striking design and individuality.

Features include:

  • Air conditioning
  • Extra beds
  • Hairdryer
  • Terrace
  • Toiletries
  • WiFi

A buffet breakfast is laid on every morning, and you can eat in the bright dining room at the 12-seater table, or at one of the tables by the pool. The spread includes homemade jams, warm rolls, fresh fruit, delicious date pastries and local hams and cheeses, plus fresh juice and cafetiere coffee. Cooked options are available on request.

For other meals, there are plenty of eating choices in the town, or in surrounding towns and villages. Chapel 5 offer discounts at various restaurants in the vicinity, and can recommend places.

Features include:

  • Breakfast
  • Restaurants nearby

  • Stroll around Naxxar, admiring its characterful old houses
  • The almost-adjoining village of Mosta is famous for its huge domed church, which is well worth a visit. In WWII a bomb fell right through the roof but didn't explode
  • Malta is so small that you can visit everywhere with ease. You’re a short drive from the hilltop town of Mdina and the catacombs of Rabat; the beaches on the northwest coast; lovely Dingli cliffs, and the mesmerising maritime cityscape of Valletta, the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities
  • You’re equally near the beaches of Melieha and Armier, as well as the watersport facilities along this stretch of coast and Malta’s wonderful National Aquarium
  • Take a boat trip to Gozo, to Comino's lagoon or around the island; you're well placed for the ferry port
  • There are early-morning yoga sessions on the rooftop every Thursday, and guests receive a complimentary 30-minute massage during the stay (1 per room)

Activities on site or nearby include:

  • Boat trips
  • Hiking
  • Historical sites
  • Horse-riding
  • Mountain biking
  • Museums / galleries
  • Scuba diving
  • Shopping / markets
  • Swimming
  • Well being
  • Windsurfing
  • Yoga

Children aged 6+ are welcome.

Best for:

Children (4-12 years)

Family friendly accommodation:

The Violet Deluxe Suite is best for families, with a double bedroom and lounge area with a double sofabed. All other suites can fit a rollaway bed (though space will be tight); we recommend Emerald, on the rooftop, as it has a small terrace area.

Alex was very helpful. The breakfast was good but identical every morning which got a bit boring by the end of the week. The room and the public areas were nicely decorated but some practical things were missing (e.g. tea/ coffee making facilities, dish/ shelf in shower for toiletries). The metal stairs up the two flights to our room were not great - although I understand they do intend to improve them. Naxxar was impossible to find from the airport in the dark in a hire car, as there were very few road signs. We would recommend having a sat-nav. There are some excellent restaurants in Naxxar - Cellini's, Brass & Knuckle and The Old Charm.

We had a fantastic time. Thank you, Jones Family for your wonderful hospitality. You have a wonderful home, which you opened up to us. We loved our stay and will be back. All the best.

We had a lovely stay in this cosy B&B. Our room was spacious and private with it's own terrace. There is a lovely pool area and we spent time relaxing by the pool (the time of year meant it was still a little too cold to get in!) Malcolm and Alex were wonderful hosts and were always on hand for help and advice and made some excellent recommendations for coffee/ dinner - I would definitely recommend Cellini wine bar for excellent food and a great atmosphere; guests at Chapel 5 get a free Maltese platter too! Naxxar itself is a great place to stay with easy access to Valletta, Gozo etc by bus. There are some great dining options/ bars in the area too. We would definitely recommend this lovely place to anyone looking for a relaxing stay in Malta with excellent, personal service.

We spent lovely three nights at this cosy property. The owners went out of their way to provide recommendations of restaurants, things to see and made reservations for us. We were even able to organize a car through them. The room was nice but the open bathroom is not everyone's cup of tea. We stayed in the Blue Suite which has a narrow staircase, so pack lightly. Overall a lovely experience in Naxxar, a cute little town with many dining options

The room was comfortable, roomy and nicely decorated with a rustic effect. Bathroom was nice with locally sourced toiletries but was a little marred because some building work was taking place in the apartment next door, but that did not take away from how nice the room was with modern, quiet, air conditioning. I would recommend the taxi service from the airport because the B&B is tricky to find even with a reasonable map. Naxxar itself is a lovely town with a great range of bars, cafes and restaurants.

Good value accommodation with a nice family feel. Breakfasts need work; selection limited and could be easily improved. Property great but the village/ town does not offer much in the way of restaurants/ bars etc.
